Asian teams make their mark on International Cycling Classic

Posted

Cyclists representing Team Taiwan and Team Hong Kong have taken wins in the early stages of the Point Premium Root Beer International Cycling Classic, making their mark on the Superweek series that continues in Brown Deer Park on Wednesday.

Feng Chung-Kai (Team Taiwan) won the opening race in the 43rd annual Superweek on Friday night in the Beverly Hills Cycling Classic. Feng surged out from the pack to gather sprint points and cash lap prizes, then held off John Grant (Texas Roadhouse/Motorex) for the win.

Grant exacted a measure of revenge on Saturday night, by winning the GoodSpeed Cycles Homewood Classic.

In the women's pro ranks, Wan Yiu (Jamie) Wong crossed the line first for her Team Hong Kong squad in the Richton Park Criterium on Monday.

With the stop in Chicago suburb, the Superweek field added to its foreign contingent. The Garneu-Club Chaussures team joined the series and put Canadian Jeff Schiller out front for the victory.

Field sizes in the early races in the 17-race have been relatively small, roughly 30 pro riders. A number of top U.S. teams have been competing in the Tour de Toona and the BC Superweek in Canada.

At least some of those riders will filter into the International Cycling Classic in the coming days.

Racing in Brown Deer Park starts at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, and the pro women take the line at 1:15 p.m. The men's start on the criterium course is at 2:30 p.m.
