Given the record-level heat yesterday, I was compelled to ring Glenn Caffery this morning and find if he had melted on the Wisconsin portion of his cross-country journey.
The 49-year-old from western Massachusetts started from Oregon in May and is running to Rhode Island to raise money to support Alzheimer's disease research. He found the Glacial Drumlin Trail out of Madison on Wednesday and slogged out more than 20 miles to Lake Mills.
"The sum total of yesterday was utterly exhausting," Caffery said. "When I got off the trail, I had to go a mile and a half to the B and B where I was staying, and I slowed to a crawl. I was exhausted, moreso than any other point on the trip."
Caffery was back at it this morning, with a scaled-back plan to reach Wales, about 37 miles on foot.
Local ultra veteran Todd Egnarski joined him for a few miles and Caffery welcomes any other company as he proceeds to Milwaukee and the Lake Express Ferry on Friday.
His physical exhaustion did not diminish his enthusiasm for his cause or the Badger State.
"I've been through beautiful, beautiful states and Wisconsin is gorgeous," Caffery said. "The rolling hills, and the fields and the silos and the barns, it's just so beautiful. The county roads are extraordinary. The county roads in other places are dirt. I was treated to expert route planning in Wisconsin."
Anyone looking to join Caffery or to lend lodging and support can contact him via email Alzrun@gmail.com.
