Jury: Driver only partly to blame for cyclist's death

Posted

A north-central Iowa jury concluded in early September that the driver of a pickup who ran over and killed a Mason City cyclist three years ago bore only 20 percent of the blame for the fatal crash.

The jury did not award damages to Dawn Lind, the widow of Richard Lick, 49, who died from his injuries in the July 2008 collision. She sued Mark R. Hulsing Jr., the driver of the truck, and Vernon D. Hulsing, the truck's owner.

Lind was biking on a Mason City street when Hulsing turned his truck left in front of Lind without warning, according to the lawsuit. The jury assigned a majority of the blame to Lind. According to Radio Iowa, police reported Lind did not have lights on his bicycle and he was wearing dark clothing at the time of the crash.

Dawn Lind was ordered to pay $768 in court costs.
