A 2008 Muskego High School graduate, Calmes was second in the WIAA 1,600 state championship in his senior year and finished his sophomore year running for the Adams State Grizzlies in Alamosa, Colo. His run on Wednesday night lowered the meet standard (4:11.24) set by Taylor Wardell in 2010.

Wisconsin Lutheran coach Eric Lueck started the Wiso Mile in 2008, largely to give high school athletes one more race after the WIAA state track and field championships.

On Wednesday, more than 200 athletes turned out to run in 12 races, from grade school to masters divisions.

Among the highlights: Bailey Wolf, a 7th grader from Oconto Falls, set a grade school meet record by running a time of 5:18.

Vincent Bower, of Milwaukee, won the open high school boys race in 4:32, after racing at the WIAA State Meet in the 4 x 200 relay
