Organizer cancels 2011 Unnamed Epic

Posted

The organizers of the Unnamed Epic mountain bike race followed their own "go epic or go home" creed and canceled the event after failing to develop a suitable course.

Jack Hirt announced the cancellation in an email to the registered riders, who will receive full refunds. Hirt will work to put together a 75-mile, point-to-point lay out for 2012.

The 2010 version was a brutal ride. Nearly 100 of the 240 entrants dropped out short of the finish line in Blue Mound State Park.

Still, riders and the organizers wanted a ride with more miles on tight single-track and fewer miles on roads or multi-use paths, like the Military Ridge Trail.

"I'd rather not throw a course together," Hirt said. "I'd rather create a phenomenal course for everybody."

Hirt said he would explore other parts of the state, or gaining access to land that would provide suitable trails for the Unnamed Epic 2012.
