Non-motorized trail system coming to 654-acre forest reserve with sweeping views of Lake Charlevoix

Posted

A non-motorized trail system is planned at a 654-acre forest reserve in Northern Michigan. Formerly known as “White Mountain,” the hilly forest with panoramic views of Lake Charlevoix is now called Chigidaaki: Place of the Big Hill.

With funding from nearly 220 donors, Chigidaaki was protected in 2025. The Little Traverse Conservancy’s plans for the reserve include converting existing two-tracks into a non-motorized trail system, complete with signage.

The name is the result of a request from the anonymous lead donor for this project. The donor wanted the conservancy to work with the Little Traverse Bay Bands (LTBB) of Odawa Indians to name the reserve in the Anishinaabemowin language.

The rugged landscape stands intact, which is a rarity in itself, according to the conservancy. Making it even more impactful, the reserve also abuts more than 100,000 acres of state land, including Gaylord State Forest Area and the Pigeon River Country State Forest.

The conservancy purchased the reserve in May 2025, officially protecting it. Its staff is now working to create a trails management plan.
