Ten trail projects have been selected by the Coalition for Recreational Trails (CRT) as recipients of its 2026 Tom Petri Recreational Trails Program Annual Achievement Awards.
The awards – honoring former U.S. Representative Tom Petri (WI) – recognize outstanding use of Recreational Trails Program (RTP) funds. 2026 marks the 35th anniversary of RTP, which has enabled nearly 35,000 successes across the nation serving all types of trail activities. Administered by the Federal Highway Administration, RTP demonstrates the power of partnerships linking federal agencies, state trail programs, local governments and trail enthusiasts. The ten projects will be honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on June 25 with participation by award recipients and key trail champions including Members of Congress.
In Wisconsin, the Ojibwe Trail Rehab Initiative earned an award for Maintenance and Rehabilitation. The Ojibwe Trail is a 10-mile legacy singletrack trail within the Bayfield County Forest. Originally constructed by CAMBA (Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association) between 2000 and 2002 from repurposed logging roads, deer paths, and with volunteer labor, the trail served as a pioneer asset that helped establish Northwestern Wisconsin as a premier destination for mountain biking.
