Todd Poquette, Race Director of the renown Marji Gesick, formed the nonprofit 906 AT in 2014 for a distinct purpose: To welcome youth and adults new to the bike scene. For many, the allure of mountain bike riding was about adventure, not competition. 906 AT focuses on developing happy, independent, courageous, and active youth through structured and unstructured opportunities.
Programs address youth interaction with families, performance in school, behavior in peer groups, self-confidence, and contribution to the greater community. 906 AT works to move youth focus away from a fixed mindset about themselves that can cause avoidance of new adventures and failure. Instead, a growth mindset is nurtured, offering youth time and space within challenges to overcome, to learn from failures, and discover what they are capable of achieving. Working as collaborators and good followers, becoming good leaders, allows youth to make their own, well-prepared and successful way in life. Volunteerism causes 906 AT to improve the lives of 300-plus children over three UP counties, form partnerships within area communities, obtain grants that go 100 percent to projects, purchases, and programs, using proceeds from the nationally recognized Polar Roll, Crusher, and Marji Gesick to support trail development and the 906 AT, and, since 2015, donating over $100,000 to local trail organizations. 906 AT— helping youth succeed in the world!
