Wausau Whitewater hosts Midwest Freestyle Championships this weekend
Press release from Wausau Whitewater:
The Cartwheel and Space Godzilla are just two of the trick moves expected this weekend at Wausau Whitewater Park. Paddlers throughout the Midwest will perform their freestyle moves this Saturday, August 16, and Sunday, August 17, during the Midwest Freestyle Championships.
Spectators are welcome and seating is available along the course on the east channel of the Wisconsin River. Wausau Whitewater Park is located along River Drive, southwest of the Marathon County Public Library. Most of the action for this two-day event will take place just west of the Marathon County office building and the Hangar Lounge Restaurant and Banquet Hall. Food vendor and restrooms are conveniently located on site.
The kayakers, in their covered boats, will ride the waves while trying to complete complicated twists, turns and flips, all the while maintaining balance in rushing water and throwing in some artistic flare with paddle movements. Each competitor has only 60 seconds to impress the judges and score points.
The competition takes place Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday’s schedule is similar with the lunch break falling at noon and competition wrapping up by 3 p.m. Awards will be presented after Sunday’s competition.
