ATVs with these? Families ride in what have been designated as Nationally recognized trails.
Some town boards in Wisconsin seem reluctant or unwilling to allow a fair process for their taxpayers to decide whether ATV/UTVs should be allowed on their town roads. However, here in Manitowish Waters we have some positive news to report.
Through a series of town meetings starting this past summer, opponents of ATVs have worked with the town board to insure both resident and non-resident taxpayers, who make up a majority of taxpayers in this vacation community, will have their voices heard. For resident (voting) taxpayers, the town board agreed to put the question “Should the Town of Manitowish Waters allow ATV’s on all town roads?” on the November 3 ballot as an advisory referendum. In addition, we were able to convince the town board to survey all the non-resident (non-voting) taxpayers through a mail-in survey with the same question.
In a few weeks, we will have the results from the referendum and the survey. If our town board honors the will of the people, the majority opinion will rule. In these times of deep division and animosity, we feel proud of our community for preserving the basic tenet of democracy — that all voices will be heard and honored to drive sound policy decision-making.
