Founded as a nonprofit in 2003 by Hal Honeyman, of the Bike Rack, St. Charles, IL, Hal’s interest in adaptive cycling started when his son Jacob was born with Cerebral Palsy. Hal wanted to find a way for Jacob to join the family when bicycle riding. After meeting Jacob’s needs, Hal found specialized bikes for other disabled children. He began creating specialized bikes when other bikes proved unavailable, or did not exist for that particular disability. These specialized bikes provide transportation and health-recreation, but also restore a sense of freedom, possibility, and ability to those who often hear in society that limitations define their lives. Project Mobility, Inc. delivers these bikes to schools with children with disabilities, rehabilitative hospitals, and other places for the disabled. This includes Shiners’ Hospital, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Access Chicago, Illinois schools, the University of Illinois, Independence First, Great Lakes Adaptive Sports, Molloy Education Center, and Fox Valley Special Recreation. All provide the freedom of mobility and the experience of riding.
